It's been about a year, so might as well pick this back up.
I had to abandon the Granite Anvil 2017 after around 600k because of the same knee issue that has plagued me since Paris-Brest-Paris 2015. This was/is very frustrating.
1200k ~38,000 ft of climbing.
I felt great during the ride, I guess another disappointing aspect of taking the DNF.
The bike:
The bike was set up similar to how I rode all my brevets in 2017.
The support for the ride was unbelievable. The organizers really made it easier to concentrate on the riding. Like I said, I felt great on the ride. I was rested, I was strong, I wasn't struggling in any way, but, my knee just gave up. I couldn't put any pressure on my left leg without horrible pain.
If I EVER get my knee issue taken care of, I feel like I need to ride this again just to prove that I can finish. It goes through some beautiful areas, so attempting this ride again won't be a difficult decision.
Oh yeah, it was my first time seeing a black bear on the side of the road while on a bike, so there is that....
Some pics from the road:
